Credit / Mention de source : Library and Archives Canada, C-100658 / Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, C-100658 Description / Descriptions : The sitter John Porteous II (flourishing late eighteenth century) has been identified as the son of John Porteous I who had emigrated from Scotland in 1765 to New Brunswick and then went to Montreal.The Porteous family was active in the fur trade, the militia and the political and commercial life of Montreal in the early nineteenth century. They were instrumental in the founding of Canada's first chartered bank, the Bank of Montreal. This miniature and those of Bartholomew Gugy, and Jeanne Elizabeth Tessier de la Tour, were acquired from a Porteous family descendant. / Le sujet John Porteous II (période florissante à la fin du XVIIIe siècle) a été identifié comme le fils de John Porteous I, qui avait émigré d'Écosse au Nouveau-Brunswick en 1765 pour ensuite s’établir à Montréal. La famille Porteous joua un rôle actif dans le commerce des fourrures, la milice et la vie commerciale et politique de Montréal au début du XIXe siècle. Elle participa à la fondation de la première banque à charte du Canada, la Banque de Montréal. Cette miniature et celles de Bartholomew Gugy et de Jeanne Elizabeth Tessier de la Tour ont été acquises d'un descendant de la famille Porteous. |
