Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Pinkuylluna hill across from the main site ( pinkuyllo means a wind musical instrument similar to the Andean flute) where an imposing huge building stands out. It was a “Qollqa” or “Pirwa”; that is, a granary or storehouse for food, clothing and weapons for the local army. It has many doorways and openings that allowed ventilation, and surely they were built up there to enable protection of the stored goods.

Ollantaytambo , the Inca fortress, which guarded the entry of this part of the Sacred Valley and protected it from invasion. The fortress consists of a series of superimposed terraces of carved stones accessed by long staircases. It was a strategic military, religious and agricultural center. It was here that Manco Inca’s warriors successfully defeated Pizarro in 1536 and subsequently enclosed the site and the valley with a defensive wall.

Ollantaytambo is a quechua word “Ollanta” that was the name of an Inca General and “Tambo” means a city that offered and hosted, food and comfort for travelers, Ollantaytambo means “Tambo de Ollanta ”.
