Description
Español: Son organismos marinos comunes de ecosistemas entre el nivel de mar en marea baja y el nivel del mar en marea alta, y también de ecosistemas situados desde la línea de la marea baja hasta la plataforma continental que se encuentran siempre cubiertas de agua.

Son ejemplares de tamaño moderado, de 30 a 60 milímetros de longitud.

El caparazón está compuesto por ocho válvulas dorsales, normalmente superpuestas y la faja es un tegumento muscular flexible en el que están incrustadas las válvulas articuladas.

La faja está cubierta por una gruesa cutícula quitinosa y puede estar desnuda o adornada con elementos calcáreos, córneos o quitinosos, como escamas, espinas, espineletas, cerdas y pelos. La faja puede estar irregularmente bandeada y cubierta de espineletas (espinas pequeñas) cilíndricas de color marrón y crema e incluso verde.
