Gerti is testing for contingencies between her own behavior and the mirror image by moving back and forth and left and right in front of the mirror. Note the behavior after 20 s when Gerti very slowly bends to the left and inspects her mirror image with the mark. We never observed similar behavior in any social interaction between two magpies. |
