Summary
[edit]DescriptionMemaloose - Island of the Dead.jpg |
English: This was taken at Memaloose Park near The Dalles, Oregon on January 6, 2016. Until very recent times, the native peoples of OR And WA along the Columbia River didn't bury their dead. Instead, bodies were wrapped in robes or tule mats and put in canoes that were placed in the woods, on rocky points, or on islands like Memaloose. The name Memaloose comes from memalust in the Chinook language "to die." The Corps of Discovery lead by Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark passed this island on the way to the Pacific Ocean on October 29, 1805 and called it "Sepulcher Island" (burial island). On the Homeward Journey Lewis visited the Island on April 15, 1806 and observed "There are thirteen sepulchers on this rock which stands near the center of the river and has a surface of about two acres above high water mark." |
