Summary

[edit]
Description

Fossil spores in carbonaceous shale from the Pennsylvanian of Ohio, USA.

Click on the photo to zoom in - the round, flattened discs are fossil trilete megaspores, probably derived from ancient lycopod trees. The host rock is a dark, carbonaceous shale that may be equivalent to the Jackson Shaft Coal or the Wellston Coal.

Stratigraphy: dark, fissile, carbonaceous shale unit above the "Sharon Conglomerate", lower Pottsville Group, upper Lower Pennsylvanian

Locality: Jackson North Outcrop - roadcut along the southwestern side of Route 35, immediately southeast of the Route 35-Lloyds Bridge Road intersection (the northwestern intersection - there are two of them), north of the town of Jackson, northwest-central Jackson County, southern Ohio, USA (39° 06’ 32.94” North latitude, 82° 40’ 39.99” West longitude)
