Title
Medieval zoomorphic buckle
Description
English: Medieval buckle; cast copper alloy single loop buckle frame with zoomorphic terminal, which may be a buckle of 13th or 14th century date. The buckle consists of an oval loop, the frame of which extends into a curved band at one end. The band tapers to a point and has the look of a bird’s head. The opposite end has a little knop, with an incised line across it. The knop is broken off. The back face of the object has a little curved notch cut into either side, which may represent the location of the fixing mechanism for the pin. There are remains of gilding across the object.

Length 39.4mm, width 17.9mm, thickness 4.4mm, weight 3.93g

Refs: See Egan’s “Dress accessories”, page 254 for examples of brooches of this date of similar shape but with different pin fixings, especially brooch 1335. Benet, page 458, artefact M12-0215 is very similar and still has its pin bar and pin.

See also the brooches on the database with double zoomorphic protrusions, such as ESS-88E111 or WMID-CA8CF6.
