Summary

[edit]
Description

The mechanical air circulation and heating cut-off valves, enabling the occupants of the bunker to close down air vents leading to rooms which aren't in use, thereby conserving precious oxygen, fuel and warmth.

I volunteered to help out the people of <a href="http://www.atoombunker.nl/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Alarmfase 026</a> (Stichting NCO Arnhem & Nationaal Noodnet) moving in some new historical artifacts for display and some spare parts salvaged from other bunkers. I couldn't resist taking some pictures as well.

The museum is located in the former <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posterijen,_Telegrafie_en_Telefonie_(Nederland)" rel="noreferrer nofollow">PTT</a> (<a href="http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTT_(Nederland)" rel="noreferrer nofollow">PTT, Nederlands</a>) NCO Arnhem communications <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout_shelter" rel="noreferrer nofollow">atomic bunker</a>, built under the "<a href="http://www.deleukelinde.nl/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">De Leuke Linde</a>" playground during the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_War" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Cold War</a> (<a href="http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koude_Oorlog" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Koude Oorlog</a>). After the Cold War ended, it was used as a high-secure relay station for the <a href="http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationaal_Noodnet" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Nationaal Noodnet</a> emergency communications network.
