Summary
[edit]DescriptionMarking off a slate - geograph.org.uk - 302719.jpg |
English: Marking off a slate. This picture, taken at the 1999 National Eisteddfod of Wales held at Llanbedrgoch on Anglesey, shows a member of the Gilfach Ddu (Dinorwig)Welsh Slate Museum staff at the museum's eisteddfod stand giving a demonstration of how to split and dress a roofing slate. Having split the 'clwt' (block of slate) into thin sheets with a 'cyn manhollt', a wide, thin chisel, he takes his 'pren mesur', a graduated measuring stick with a pointed nail at the end, and draws a perfect rectangle of the required size on the sheet. The sheet will then be trimmed into a finished slate using a steel knife.
The stand, hired by the National Museum of Wales, would be one of two hundred or more similar stands annually on the Eisteddfod field featuring the work of various Welsh cultural institutions. The bare-legged gentleman on the left is a Roman auxiliary. |
