Summary
[edit]DescriptionLittle bulrush, Trichophorum pumilum (28258211389).jpg |
little bulrush, Trichophorum pumilum, California, White Mountains, Cottonwood Basin, Poison Creek, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 2886 m (9470 ft). This miniature bulrush is circumboreal, occuring throughout the colder and higher latitudes and elevations of the northern hemisphere, and as far south as the Sierra Nevada of North America and the Himalayas of central Asia. Besides liking its feet very wet, it has a strong preference for calcareous and carbonate substrates, which keeps its populations spotty and scattered. Here in the White Mountains, these nearly invisible, 3-4 inch high plants are known so far only at this one unusual carbonate spring site, where they were first documented by Dean Wm Taylor in 1992. If they occur anywhere else in the White Mountains, they might be masquerading as Eleocharis quinqueflora, another miniature and superficially similar sedge that is locally common in subalpine wetlands here. The shiny black fruits of little bulrush are distinctive when present. |
