A sign at the entrance to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, heralds the arrival of launch day for the agency’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer, or OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. Mounted atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, OSIRIS-REx is scheduled to lift off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 41 at 7:05 p.m. EDT, Sept. 8. The spacecraft will be the first U.S. mission to sample an asteroid, retrieve at least two ounces of surface material and return it to Earth for study.
