Notes |
English: This is an image of the Byzantine emperor John II Komnenos (reigned 1118-1143). It is a photograph of a mosaic in Hagia Sophia (Istanbul), the image has been digitally altered to restore the facial features lost to damage on the original (to the best of my abilities). The missing eye is essentially cut-and-pasted from the surviving one. The treatment of the nose is from a mosaic of the subject's son, Alexios, which is in the same location. Also, John IIs sister, Anna Komnene, described his nose as being 'between straight and aquiline', which has been attempted to depict. The treatment of the mouth and beard are a composite of those on the mosaics of Alexios (mouth) and the Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos (mouth and beard, also in Hagia Sophia). Additionally, manuscript images of John II, his father Alexios I, his other son Manuel I, and brother Isaac had some influence. The original photograph was already on Wikimedia Commons and has thus been released for use under GNU. The original photograph: File:Jean II Comnene.jpg. |
