| Description |
English: This is an illustration of the fictional god Cthulhu, drawn in pencil by Spencer Alexander McDaniel. The illustration was begun in around July 2020 and completed in October of the same year. The writing along the bottom of the illustration is in Ancient Greek and Latin and bears an ominous prediction that Cthulhu will soon rise from the dead city of R'lyeh to enslave all of humanity.
The illustration intentionally alludes to various events that took place in the year 2020 that have been seen as having certain apocalyptic dimensions. The comet in the background was inspired by Comet NEOWISE, which was visible in July 2020, and the orange skies are inspired by the orange skies that were seen over much of the west coast of the United States in September 2020. The churning waves of the sea beneath Cthulhu represent the many terrible hurricanes that took place in that year. |
