Summary

Description Introduced, cool-season, perennial herb to 20 cm tall. Bulbs are perennial to 2 cm wide. Leaves and flowers die back over summer. Leaves are 3–6 in number, 5–18 cm long and pleated. The flowering stem is usually unbranched. Spathe bracts enclose 1 or 2 flowers; only 1 open at any time. Perianth is pale blue; outer tepals are 2–2.5 cm long, with dark triangle near base and white, spotted claw; inner tepals are 5–7 mm long, each with a dark nectary. Style is 3-branched. Flowering is from October to December; usually flowers open mid-morning and close in the afternoon. A native of the USA, it grows in disturbed grassland sites from Sydney to Kempsey.
