enery. A substantial bridgespans the Yellowstone River about two miles from theLake Hotel. The road passes through the valley ofPelican Creek, along the south shore of Turbid Lake,and gradually ascends the mountains along the foot hillsof Avalanche Peak to Sylvan Pass, on the headwaters ofClear Creek. Before the pass is reached one of the fin-est panorama views of the Park is to be had. Yellow-stone Lake occupies the foreground, and the distantsnow-clad peaks of the Tetons, Quadrants, Electric Peak,Mount Washburn, and the entire Rocky Mountain rangewithin the Park, outline the horizon. It is about eight-een miles from the Lake Hotel to Sylvan Pass, and aside trip to this rugged portion of the Park is now pos-sible. Excellent camping grounds will be found be-tween the pass and Sylvan Lake, and, until hotel accom-modations are provided, it will be necessary to carrycamp equipment, as it will require nearly two days tovisit all the interesting points of this section. Yellowstone Lake to Falls and Canyon*—The road from the lake to the Grand Canyon follows the val-ley of the Yellowstone the entire distance, seventeen miles,and most of the way quite near the river. It passesMud Geysers, Sulphur Mountain, across Hayden Val-ley, and within four miles of the National Park GameEnclosure, in the upper valley of Trout and AlumCreeks, where it is intended to protect specimens ofall the large animals found in this region—buffalo, elk,deer and mountain sheep. Mud Geysers are about five miles from the LakeHotel, and consist of several large craters filled withblue, pasty mud, one and all emitting odors far fromagreeable.
