[edit]DescriptionGutter cast (Cuyahoga Formation, Lower Mississippian; Rt. 35 roadcut, northeast of Rittenours, Ohio, USA) (40044709575).jpg |
Gutter cast in the Mississippian of Ohio, USA. (cross-section view; inverted) Gutter casts are curvilinear, trough-like structures that occur in some sedimentary successions. The gutters formed by erosive gullying. The sediments that fill the gutters are often sufficiently different from those in which the gutter is incised. After lithification and weathering, the sediment fills erode out as casts. In this photo, the upper rock surface is the lower/bottom surface of the gutter cast.
