A favourite seaside bathing-place,frequented chiefly by Italians in thesummer, with a mild winter climatefor invalids. The ancient Vicetia, situated atthe confluence of two small rivers,the Bacchiglione and Retrone,which are crossed by eight bridges.One of them, consisting of a singlearch, is ascribed to Palladio,who constructed many of thebuildings in the town. The Piazzadei Signori is a handsome square.Here are two columns erected bythe Venetians, resembling those inthe Piazza S. Marco at Venice, anda campanile 270 ft. high. TheBasilica Palladiana has a grandcolonnade in two stories, Doric andIonic — a fine work of 1549, byPalladio. These columns surroundthe town hall, or Palazzo dellaRagione, a Gothic building.Several of the public buildings andprivate mansions merit attention.
