Coconino Sandstone as seen along the Hermit Trail. NPS Photo by Kristen M. Caldon. Thickness: 150-500 ft. It was deposited 275 million years ago, during the Paleozoic Era- Early Permian Period. Known as the “bathtub ring” to Canyon hikers, the Coconino Sandstone forms a distinct tan colored cliff a short ways below the rim of the canyon. The climate dried significantly at the time the Coconino Sandstone was deposited. Storms rising over the mountains dropped their moisture on the eastern slopes. Only dry winds were able to continue on to Arizona and a vast desert developed in the area. The Grand Canyon region would have looked much like the Sahara desert in northern Africa does today. Fossilized footprints of both vertebrates and invertebrates are abundant in this rock layer. Fossils such as these, that are the preserved evidence of life but not the actual body or shell of the animal, are called trace fossils.
