Description

Com o domínio quase absoluto dos Portugueses nas rotas do Atlântico Norte, a defesa das ilhas não mereceu qualquer cuidado especial. Por esta razão, em 1566, o Funchal acabou por ser vítima dum terrível ataque desencadeado pelos corsários.

E apesar da constante iminência de novo ataque, só em 1614 é que se construiu a Fortaleza de Santiago com o intuito de proteger a cidade dos piratas. Em 1767 foi ampliada e sempre foi usada com fins militares até 1992, altura em que foi cedida ao Governo Regional que decidiu utilizá-la para fins culturais. A partir de então, começou a exibir um programa cultural variado, sob a tutela do Museu de Arte Contemporânea, com uma exposição permanente essencialmente dedicada aos últimos anos da pintura em Portugal.
