| Description | I was standing at the top the 311 steps of Wren's Monument in the City of London. You get quite a view, including local churches St Dunstan in the East and All Hallows by the Tower [foreground], the Tower of London itself and Canary Wharf, flanked by the Citi and HSBC buildings [distance]. Now try and imagine this view around the turn of the 18th century just after the completion of the Monument and the gothic steeple of St Dunstan's, which Wren also designed. The churches, a few buildings in the City and lots of countryside just beyond the city walls. |
