Español: Los flamencos comunes según una tradición judía, quizás la leyenda más antigua sobre flamencos afirma que el chol fue el único animal del Edén que resistió la tentación y conservó la vida eterna. Los egipcios recogieron ésta idea y mitificaron también al flamenco. Lo denominaron fénix, como referencia a su color rojizo, llegándolo a considerar un animal totémico, un semidiós, que se quemaba voluntariamente en la hoguera del sol y renacía al día siguiente de sus propias cenizas. Este mito se extendió ampliamente entre los griegos, que le dieron el nombre de phoenicopterus, es decir, alas rojas, apelativo adoptado por la comunidad científica para denominar genéricamente al flamenco. |
