Summary
[edit]DescriptionFiji Sacrifice Altar, Polynesian Cultural Center (5720785027).jpg |
This building is the most prominent on the Fiji showcase. Fiji practiced human sacrifice and cannibalism; the most able, fit warrior of a given village would have been sacrificed here, and his flesh shared and eaten by the rest of the village, so that his wisdom and strength could be shared by everyone. The Polynesian Cultural Center showcases a number of different cultures from Polynesia, a large region of Pacific islands that stretch from Hawaii to New Zealand. It is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is affiliated with the neighboring Brigham Young University–Hawaii. Needless to say, some of the exhibits are more about the spread of Christianity through Polynesia rather than traditional culture. Nevertheless this is an excellent place to get an overview of Polynesia and its major cultures. (And sure enough, the guide, a student volunteer at BYU, told me that cannibalism was stopped in Fiji thanks to the spread of Christianity.) |
