Literally saved from destruction, the Eldridge Street Synagogue represents an older, simpler time. Towards the end of the 19th Century, Jews from Eastern Europe began migrating to the United States. Many of them ended up as worshippers at Eldridge and service has been continuously running there since living memory. Most of the original inhabitants of the neighborhood moved away, and today the area is of course Chinatown. But the Eldridge Street Synagogue stands as a testament to the promise, the hope and the sense of community that it's patrons represented not so long ago.
