Text Appearing Before Image:
.The land area of the present park need not be materiallychanged except that a through road for pleasure travelshould be provided, as suggested on the plan herewith(Fig. 28). The waterfront character of the existing parkcan be preserved if a satisfactory pool is retained at theexisting bath houses. The park area should be extended toinclude all the land southwest of the present park, betweenthe location of the existing railroad and the proposedfreight yard area, and as far south as the proposed diagonalextension of Porter street. In this area a pool can bereserved, the pleasure way extended, and a playgroundmade that will compensate for the proposed reduction inthe area of the Cottage Street Playground. From thesouth end of this proposed extension a broad boulevard toMaverick square is suggested. This boulevard can bemade to serve as an important highway, and a locationalso for a rapid transit subway, and for it the land should beacquired at once before further improvements interfere.
Text Appearing After Image:
FIG. 28 —WOOD ISLAND PARK REVISION AND EXTENSION PLAN. Development of East Boston. 87 Beyond the city limits the proposed park extensionnorthward should be further continued to connect with themetropolitan park system, either at Short Beach alongBelle Isle inlet or over a bridge and through Cottage Parkto Winthrop Beach reservation at Great Head, or, better, through both routes as suggested in Sections 42 and 43. If main thoroughfares are located as suggested on allsides of the proposed extended park (numbered 30, 38, 39,18 and 38 again), with a crossing at the narrow point (45),there will still be a stretch of park nearly a mile long nextto the railroad yard location with no cross street.
