Title |
Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) small square-headed brooch (incomplete). |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) small square-headed brooch, dating to AD 500-570. The rectangular head plate is decorated with a recessed outer frame enclosing an inner panel which has raised borders. The frame has a line of punched annulet along its inner edge; the inner panel bears an unclear engraved decoration. The bow is slightly curved in profile and in its front face it is decorated with two longitudinal flutes, which are flanked by raised outer edges and a shared central rib. The footplate is roughly lozenge-shaped in plan and has two rounded lateral lobes; it tapers towards the break. The footplate upper borders are occupied possibly by engraved animal heads. The inner panel of the foot has two raised lines, which form a lozenge-shaped field and enclose a small solid lozenge at the centre. The lateral lobes have a circle of punched annulets on the front. The back face of the head-plate has two D-shaped pierced lugs, housing fragments of the spring mechanism. The back of the bow has two raised longitudinal lines and a central groove, which is the reverse of the decoration on the front. The back of the footplate has an incomplete catch-plate. The front face of the brooch is gilded and moderately covered by metal corrosion.
Cf MacGregor-Bolick (1993, p. 122, nos. 14.4-14.7). Length: 50.12 mm Width of the plate: 25.87 mm Thickness of the plate: 1.73 mm Thickness of the bow: 4.00 mm Weight: 15.08 g |
