Definitely a gem of a rag. Labelled as a novelette and an intermezzo, it's just a really fine rag. Nellie Stokes lived in Detroit where she was employed by the publisher Jerome H. Remick, and took the opportunity to publish seven scores with them until her unfortunate death in 1914 following the birth of her second child. This was one of her last pieces and is, in my opinion, the best one of all. Published in 1909 by Jerome H. Remick in Detroit and New York. Score #50 in my current series "Women Ragtime Composers", which will continue for a while to come because there are plenty more scores written by women that are really good, if not great, that I want to feature. This rag also appeared in the CD "24 Rags by Women", selections from which I will continue to feature in the next few uploads. Thank you to JohnJ1995 for the CD info. Original score source was from York University at this link: https://yorkspace.library.yorku.ca/xmlui/bitstream/handle/10315/13750/JAC000722.pdf?sequence=2&isAllowed=y This is a reproduction of the original score, no changes were made. |
