Nederlands: De Grote Moskee in Damascus, ook wel de Omayyadenmoskee genoemd, werd tussen 706 en 715 gebouwd onder de kalief al-Walid I (705-715) van de Omayyadendynastie (661-750). Deze moskee werd gebouwd op de plek waar de basiliek van Johannes de Doper stond, een plek in het centrum van de stad waar ooit de Jupitertempel had gestaan. De basiliek werd gesloopt voor de bouw van deze moskee in de hoofdstad van het Rijk van de Omayyaden. De Grote Moskee werd door zijn omvang en inrichting in die tijd ook wel als wereldwonder beschouwd.
Op deze foto zijn mozaïeken te zien. De Grote Moskee van Damascus bezat oorspronkelijk in totaal 4000m2 goudmozaïeken, wat door geen ander gebouw kan worden geëvenaard. Er is slechts een klein deel van deze mozaïeken bewaard gebleven. De mozaïekkunst werd door de Byzantijnse christenen voor het interieur gebruikt, eerst voor de vloer, later ook voor de gewelven. Moslims gebruikten mozaïeken echter vooral voor de versiering van het exterieur. De mozaïeken in Damascus tonen verwantschap met de Romeinse vloermozaïeken. (Otto, 2007) |
