Summary
[edit]DescriptionCommemorative Plaque, Exeter - geograph.org.uk - 1145030.jpg |
English: Commemorative Plaque, Exeter The Trafalgar Way celebrates the journey of Lieutenant Lapenotiere as he carried the news of the naval victory and of Nelson's death from his landfall at Falmouth to London, which took 36 hours in November 1805. A plaque was erected in 2005 at each of the 21 stops where he changed horses or transferred post chaise. This is the Exeter (stop 7) plaque; plaque 6 (Crockernwell), which has very similar wording, is reproduced at http://www.trafalgarway.org/default.aspx?page=7751 . As that web page explains, John Richards Lapenotiere spent the equivalent of more than 6 months' pay on the journey. See also http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/EM/_events/trafalgar.php . |
