Summary
[edit]DescriptionCommemorating the victims of the helicopter disaster 1997 (218527859).jpg | This plaque hangs on the wall of the MDA medical emergency station in the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona. I saw it while on a tour of places affected by the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War. It represents the closing of a circle. In 1997 two Israeli Air Force helicopters (carrying soldiers to a mission in southern Lebanon) crashed with the loss of 73 lives. This accident was the trigger for the forming of the protest movement "Four Mothers" which lobbyed for the unilateral retreat of Israeli forces from Lebanon. This happened in May 2000 since when the Hezbollah guerilla army has been acquiring huge quantities of weapons and mounting occasional cross-border raids against Israel. And that's how Israel's 2nd Lebanon war started. |
