| Description |
L'entrée de la chapelle des Pénitents. La confrérie des Pénitents noirs existait dès les années 1665-1670 et sera reconnue par le pape Innocent XI en 1681. Les Pénitents se livrent alors à divers exercices de piété, visitent les malades et veillent à l’ensevelissement chrétien des morts. Ils s’assemblent tous les premiers vendredis de chaque mois et défilent en procession, revêtus d’un sac de toile noir percé d’un trou pour y passer la tête et ouvert sur les côtés pour y introduire les bras. Ils sont coiffés d’une cagoule. La confrérie cesse son activité sous la Terreur, en 1793, et se reconstitue pour vivre désormais au ralenti entre 1806 et 1872. |
