Clarence Flour Mills, Hull

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Clarence Flour Mills, Hull Looking northwest from the old lock entrance to Drypool Basin on St Peter Street, on the east bank of the River Hull. Clarence Flour Mills were built for Rank Ltd in 1952 around the grain silo of an older flour mill, much of which was destroyed by bombing in World War II. Rank became Rank Hovis McDougall (RHM) in 1962.

The original mill was built for Joseph Rank by city architect and fellow methodist Alfred Gelder in 1891. The part of the building with the round windows and lighter brickwork is what remains of the older silo. Joseph Rank and Alfred Gelder lived as close neighbours at 365-371 Holderness Road https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/533939 and Joseph's son Joseph Arthur was born there in December 1888 (J. Arthur grew up to become a world-renowned film producer and distributor and founder of the Rank Organisation). The windmill which was the site of the original family business still stands on Holderness Road opposite East Park. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/214461

The huge brick buildings at Clarence Flour Mills have been disused for a few years now and may soon be pulled down or remodelled as the east bank of the River Hull is scheduled for redevelopment.
