English: A rough sketch of ancestral Chickasaw cosmology. UPPER: Overworld. UPPER LEFT: Bird. UPPER RIGHT: Sun. MID: Middleworld, Earth. MIDDLE LEFT: Human male. MIDDLE RIGHT: Red Cedar Tree. BOTTOM: Underworld. BOTTOM LEFT: Moon. BOTTOM RIGHT: Eye in Hand symbol, a constellation in the night sky. CENTER: Axis Mundi running throughout all worlds. Often described as a pole or as a cedar tree. It was probably not thought of as a literal place, but more as a metaphorical concept. |
