Dogs Of War Growl Down In Chinatown. Sequel to $50 a Head Dinner Still to Be Eaten. The dogs of war are growling down in Chinatown. Six years of uninterrupted peace between the Tongs which rule New York's Chinese nay end this week, according to the dire rumor which swept through the land of the rubberneck wagon yesterday. It is the result of a little financial transaction which sent five wise Chinese boys back to China richer than they have ever been before. Liberation Dinner. Three weeks ago, these Chinese financiers, with the assistance of Charley Boston, so-called Mayor of Chinatown, collected a large sum of money for a "Liberation dinner" rant on Mott street. The dinner was to cost $50 a head, and the most prominent merchants of the district purchased tickets. The liberation of China, and the inauguration of the new president of the republic, Dr. Sun Yat Sen, were to be celebrated. When the night of the dinner arrived, the merchants were informed that the festivity was postponed. With unquestioning trust in Charley Boston, their unofficial "Mayor," the members waited. Five Went Home. Then on Saturday it became known that the five wise Chinamen who had organized the liberation dinner had wisely gone back to China, taking with them, by mistake, the money collected from the merchants. Charley Boston, general interpreter and information bureau for the district, declared that he knew nothing about it. The merchants, whose money had gone to China, were unwilling to believe this. As a result, Charley's tenure of office as Mayor of Chinatown ma yend in the first tong war for six years. The On Leong Tong, the most powerful Chinese society in the United States, backs Charley Boston. The rival organization is the society formed by the merging of the Hip Sing Tong and the Tong of the Four Brothers. "No English!" At the end of the outbreak six years ago, these fraternities signed a treaty of peace.
