English: Nautiluses are cephalopod mollusks characterized by their shells that are coiled forward in a spiral shape. They are a panchronic species: this current species is similar to extinct species found in fossil form. The umbilicated nautilus identified here is a species endemic to New Caledonia. These photographs were taken using the Cyana submersible. The CALSUB campaign aimed to explore and sample the fauna of hard or mixed bottoms of reef slopes using a submersible, to study the microdistribution of macrofauna, the bathymetric distribution of the main species and the fauna-sediment relationships. This multidisciplinary campaign was held in New Caledonia in 1989. |
