Description

The Deep Environment/Gulf of Guinea (or BIOZAIRE) program was developed by Ifremer as part of the Gulf of Guinea study in collaboration with Total Exploration. The objective of this program was to study the diversity and functioning of benthic communities in relation to the main characteristics of the deep environment on sites of the Congo-Gabon-Angola margin. The essential particularity of the Gabon-Angola margin is the coexistence of several sources of matter, namely particles of marine origin, terrestrial inputs transported on the continental shelf and by the Zaire canyon/channel up to 5000m depth and finally the presence of very active zones of emissions of cold fluids rich in methane in relation to the dissociation of gas hydrates. These different energy sources condition the development of particular benthic ecosystems based on detrital and chemosynthetic matter and describe a mosaic of habitats whose first characterization constituted the main objective of the Biozaire program.
