Nederlands: De oorversiering 'enchoni enkiook', letterlijk 'koeiehuid van het oor', bestaat uit met kralen versierde leren repen die door iedere Masai vrouw wordt gedragen vanaf de dag van haar besnijdenis tot haar oude dag. Het wordt door de uitgerekte oorlellen aangebracht. Wanneer een vrouw trouwt wordt een speciale ketting aan de rechter hanger bevestigd. Deze wordt verwijderd wanneer haar man sterft. De enchoni dient als ondersteuning van de esurutiai en isurri. Deze twee sieraden tonen dat de vrouw een besneden zoon heeft.
De enchoni enkiook werden vroeger alleen met kaurischelpen en een paar blauwe kralen gedecoreerd. Ze zijn zeer belangrijke sieraden omdat ze de vrouws relatie met de wereld van de mannen weergeven. In het algemeen is elke hanger binnen een paar anders versierd en ook de gebruikte patronen verschillen per Masai gemeenschap. |
