Summary

[edit]
Description
English: BZ.1937.18, Jeweled Cross Ivory

Byzantine Collection, Dumbarton Oaks Museum Middle Byzantine, mid-tenth century. Ivory, 29 cm x 13.8 cm (11 7/16 in. x 5 7/16 in.)

John A. Cotsonis (1994), Byzantine Figural Processional Crosses, p. 66: "The palmette border of this ivory panel encloses a large jeweled cross, crux gemmata, whose arms end in tear-shaped serifs. At the center of the cross arms is a roundel enclosing a bust portrait of a youthful emperor, turned in three-quarters view to his left, with his arms raised in prayer. It has been suggested that the emperor depicted is the young Romanos II, since the portrait shares similar features with the figure of the emperor Romanos on the ivory coronation plaque in the Cabinet des Médailles in Paris".
