Description iconographique:

La miniature figurant sur le couvercle de cette boîte reprend une composition de François Boucher, "La leçon de flûte" ou "Les Jeunes Bergers". Boucher peignit plusieurs versions de "La Leçon de flûte", inspirée du ballet-pantomime de Charles-Simon Favart, "La Vallée de Montmorency". La première, exposée au salon de 1748, et gravée par René Gaillard sous le titre "L’Agréable Leçon", a pour acteurs deux adolescents (une épreuve au musée du Louvre, département des Arts graphiques, collection Edmond de Rothschild, inv. 24516 L.R.). On retrouve cette composition, qui eut un grand succès, sur le boîtier d’une montre de François Béliard, datant des années 1756-1762, conservée au musée Cognacq-Jay (inv. J 644). Une variante plus tardive se présente comme une bergerie enfantine, suivant la mode lancée par Mme de Pompadour à Bellevue : c’est celle de cette boîte de Georges-Antoine Croze.
