Summary
[edit]DescriptionBlaupunkt Rundfunkdetektor - ca. 1938.jpg |
English: Plugin crystal detector used in a radio receiver made by Blaupunkt, Germany, ca. 1938. An early form of diode, it's function was to rectify the radio wave, extracting the audio (sound) modulation signal. This is a "carborundum detector", using a crystal of silicon carbide (then called carborundum) clamped between two spring-loaded contacts. Carborundum was used in crystal radios, and also in some vacuum tube radios between 1920 and 1950 because it was more sensitive than vacuum tube detectors.
