English: Birthplace of James Clerk Maxwell At this house, No.14, India Street, Edinburgh, James Clerk Maxwell was born in 1831. It now houses a small museum in his honour. He has been described as, "One of the greatest theoretical physicists in the world". Amongst much else he did pioneering work on electromagnetic radiation and was the first Cavendish professor of experimental physics at Cambridge. He died tragically young in 1879. His work is said to have paved the way for Einstein and Max Planck. A very fine statue of him has recently been erected at the east end of George Street, Edinburgh. |
