lfmillion circuit miles in toll plant estimated for the end of thisyear, approximately four and a quarter million will be in tollcable. This percentage will be constantly increasing with theimmediate following years. The extension of the toll cableprogram over the next five-year period contemplates cable ona large proportion of all of the major toll routes of the country.The magnitude of the proposed cable networks is shown inFigures 8 and 9. Figure 8 illustrates the main toll cable routesof the United States and Canada. Figure 9 shows the maincable routes and extensions in the northeastern area of the 131 BELL TELEPHONE QUARTERLY United States and Canada, the development in this area beingconsiderably more dense than in any other section of thecountry. It will be seen that in accordance with these pro-posed five-year plans toll cable will extend entirely across thecontinent and up and down the length of both the Atlantic andPacific coasts, as well as practically from Canada to Mexico

With the completion ofthis large toll cable program, it is apparent that some of thetoll messages will be routed within the five-year period throughmore than 4,000 miles of cable. The toll cable which will be installed in the Bell System thisyear will amount to nearly 5,000 miles. This amount will be 132 DEVELOPMENTS IN TOLL TELEPHONE SERVICE increased to between 6,000 and 7,000 miles for next year, andit is expected that the yearly additions will continue at thatrate or even higher for the next few years thereafter. Theestimated construction expenditures for the toll cable additionsduring 1929, including the supporting structures, conduit runs,and repeater and terminal equipments, will be in the order ofabout $100,000
