ROUTIXC OF A TYPICAL CALL The routing of a typical call fromLowell, Massachusetts, to FortWorth, Texas, ARlington 5-1234,is shown on the chart below. The operator at Lowell woulddial the code 915 AR 5-1234 overthe Lowell-Boston circuit into theBoston toll crossbar switching sys-tem. The machine at Boston wouldfirst test all trunks to Dallas; and, ifthey were busy, would select a trunkin the final group to New York andsend the call along to the toll cross-bar system in New York. Customer dialing is now in a statecomparable to that of operator tolldialing about 1943. Customers aredialing short-haul toll and multi-unitcalls very successfully in limitedfields, concentrated particularly inmetropolitan areas. In these areas,automatic ticketing, zone registra-tion, and local automatic message ac-counting (AMA) are all in use forrecording billing information.
