Telephone Company engineers have incorporated safety in the design and maintenance of trucks and other motor vehicle equipment bership in various organizations—such as National and local SafetyCouncils, and the American Stand-ards Association—keeps in touchwith the progress of safety programsthroughout the country. The Tele-phone Companies also work closelywith gas, electric, and power com-panies and other utilities so that bestuse may be made of pooled experi-ences. Svstem operates some55,000 trucks and mo-tor vehicles. Thesevehicles, along withwinches, derricks, pole-hole diggers, trailers,cable plows, tractors,and other heavy powerequipment, present asubstantial exposure toaccidents. With thegrowth in traffic on thecountrvs streets andhighways, the opera-tion of all this equip-ment has become in-creasingly difficult.
