TelephonePioneers and the first Secretary,served for three years. In that timehe set the Association well on theroad which it was to follow throughthe years to come. At the time ofthe fourth Annual Convention atRichmond, Virginia, in 1914, Mr.Pope was seriously ill and could notattend. His duties were performedby Roswell H. Starrett of the Ameri-can Telephone and Telegraph Com-pany and, because of the prospect of 1943 The Telephone Pioneers of America 135 Mr. Popes continuing illness, Mr.Starrett was elected to succeed himas of January i, 1915. Mr. Starrett served as Secretary formore than seventeen years. Whilehe was in office the Association grewthrough the years of larger and largerAnnual Conventions and then em- American Telephone and TelegraphCompany. During his seven years ofexecutive service the Association grewrapidly, adding 10 chapters and morethan doubling its membership. Inthis period the movement toward theformation of councils and smallergroups within chapters, begun in

Mr. Starrett was succeeded onJune I, 1932, by John Groener of the 1930, saw extensive development.On May 31, 1939, Mr. Groener laiddown the reins of office, and was suc-ceeded by the present incumbent ofthe secretaryship, Samuel T.
