M n g 5u n BELL TELEPHONE QUARTERLY orchestra, is to be transmitted, the circuit must be arranged sothat the weaker passages will reach the radio listener clearlyand without cross-talk or other undesirable noise. The cir-cuit must also be specially arranged so that when the highervolumes are transmitted, the apparatus in the circuit will notoverload and thus distort the musical tones. For these highervolumes it is also necessary to take special care to avoid thepossibility of crosstalk from the program circuit into paral-leling circuits which may be carrying other programs or regulartelephone messages. Provision must also be made for still another factor which,although also encountered in the transmission of speech, is ofparticular importance in the transmission of music, by reasonof the wide range of frequencies transmitted in the latter case.This is technically known as delay distortion.
