This was the force with whichLord Methuen began his march along thewestern border of the Free State for the reliefof beleaguered Kimberley. Lord Methuen had established his head-quarters at Orange River camp on November12th. On the 15th the Guards began to arrive.The troops were practised in night marching,in the neighbourhood of the camp. Order-were issued that baggage was to be reducedto the lowest possible limit. Only eight news^paper correspondents were allowed to accompanvthe column, and even they were not to takeservants or to be mounted. They were to haveone horse for each pair of journalists, and theynaturally used it to carry some light baggage anda few comforts with which to supplement thecamp rations. It was furtherordered that buttons should be dulled, and ser-geants should remove the red chevrons fromtheir sleeves.
