s. On the further side of the river was stationeda large force of Matabele, the amajakas ofthe Royal Regiment and others. These youngwarriors, suspecting that the two white men werethe scouts of some patrol that was advancing toattack them, at first made hostile demonstrations ;and it was, possibly, fortunate for Dawson andRiley that the Shangani was full at the time andquite impassable. The river did not subside untilFebruary 22nd ; but in the meanwhile Dawsonand the indunas of the regiments opposite com-municated with each other by shouting acrossthe swollen stream. Dawson thus succeeded 116 BATTLES OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. in delivering his message of peace, allajed theapprehension of the Matabele, and estabhshedfriendly relations with them. On the 22nd somemen swam acrossthe river to Daw-son, and he wasenabled to more ■^/ of the mission was thus effected, and the rapidpacification of the country was insured.
