Devata, bas-relief sur les murs du Bayon _________________ Le Bayon est le temple-montagne du roi khmer : Jayavarman VII (1181-1218), le vainqueur des Chams et le plus grand constructeur des rois khmers. La construction du Bayon a commencé vers 1195. Ce temple est célèbre pour ses 54 tours décorées par 4 visages. Comme temple d'Etat, il était au centre d'Angkor Thom, la capitale du royaume. C'est un temple "œcuménique " qui associe l'hindouisme (les dieux Shiva et Vishnu y sont largement présents) et le bouddhisme car le Roi était lui-même bouddhiste du grand véhicule : Mahâyâna. Le Roi et la famille royale étaient représentés dans le Bayon sous forme de bouddhas dans les chapelles entourant la grande tour centrale. |
