Title
Anglo-Saxon Strap Fitting
Description
English: Early Medieval cast copper alloy strap fitting with a hook at one terminal and an iron rivet at the other terminal. The sub-triangular fitting is comprised of an incomplete hook with a 'D' shaped cross section, which attaches to a flat hexagonal shaped plate with concave edges. This section of the plate has a central openwork circle immediately surrounded by an incised circle. Extending from the side opposite to the hooked end are two sub-rectangular arms. One arm is complete, with a semi-circular terminal with two curved iron knobs extending from the side. This terminal contains the corroded remains of an iron rivet. This arm is covered in corrosion, any details of decoration being obscured. The other arm is incomplete, with a worn break just before the position of the (missing) semi-circular terminal. The arm is decorated with an incised linear lozenge, running parallel to the edges of the fitting. The brooch has a dull mid brown patina. It is 47.12mm long, 22.71mm wide and 6.86mm thick. The fitting is of an 11th century Anglo-Scandinavian date. It has been suggested that these fittings may have been used as clasps from a leather strap or bag. Examples of similar artefacts can be found in Tattenhoe and Westbury. Iverns et al 1995. p351, fig 153 no 79, no 211. PAS examples include HAMP-1733D0, NMS-C0E720 and BUC-D4F937.
