Description
English: On December 2, 2024, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image highlighting East Antarctica’s Amery Ice Shelf. Black borderlines have been overlain on the image to show the outline of the V-shaped ice shelf. Spanning more than 60,000 square kilometers (23,000 square miles), the Amery Ice Shelf is the largest ice shelf in East Antarctica and the third largest in all of Antarctica. The floating shelf of ice is fed primarily by the Lambert, Mellor, and Fisher Glaciers. The Lambert Glacier, visible at the inland tip of the ice shelf in this image, is one of the largest in the world. With a drainage basin greater than 1 million square kilometers (386,000 square miles), it drains about 16 percent of the ice from East Antarctica.
